Physics: A Hot Topic of Conversation for Teenagers
How the physical world functions has long been discussed by the likes of Galileo, Newton and Einstein. And, its now a hot topic of conversation with students from Bergen County, NJ and San Luis, Argentina.
Bergen Techs physics and Spanish classes talked to their peers in Argentina, on their first weekly web conference. These students are taking physics through the Center for Teaching and Learnings Progressive Science Initiative (PSI). CTL Director Dr. Robert Goodman said, our students will help students abroad learn physics while refining their language skills. Since its launch in 2009, PSI has impacted science education across New Jersey and now its reached South America.
According to Bergen Tech Spanish teacher, Rosa Gutierrez, This is an authentic learning opportunity for our students who study Spanish to communicate with native Spanish speakers. At the same time, students in Argentina can practice using English with native English speakers.
Whats really exciting is that students are discussing important topics around algebra-based physics, deepening their content knowledge, while cultivating their language skills.
CTL Director Dr. Robert Goodman traveled to San Luis, Argentina to train physics teachers in PSI. As a result of the training program, Universidad de La Punta had the English version of the algebra-based physics materials translated into Spanish so that Spanish speaking students everywhere, including the U.S can use them freely (visit www.njctl.org).
